Guineas Weekend
Obviously, it's an exciting time with Guineas weekend, feeling like the season is really kicking off now and championships are underway. I've finished second and third a couple of times, which weighs heavily on my mind. As everyone keeps asking me, 'Are you going for the Jockey Championship this year?' I've been striving for it for several years now, but unfortunately haven't quite ridden enough winners to clinch it. It gets tricky with the focus on finding good horses for big days in my fortunate job with William Haggas, which limits my opportunities at smaller meetings to accumulate the doubles, trebles, and four winners that can make all the difference in the championship race by season's end. Nevertheless, I'll be giving my absolute best, hoping this could be the year it pays off.
Looking ahead to the weekend, there are some exciting rides. Unequal Love, our Wokingham winner and Haydock Sprint Cup placed filly, is back in action. With a bit of luck, she can start the day well! She's obviously a filly with a lot of ability and a lot of speed, so that would be great!
Then, I'm riding More Thunder, a fascinating horse who recently switched from 1 mile 2 furlongs to 6 furlongs, a rare move, and won at Newmarket during the trials meeting. Now back on fast ground with a lighter weight of 8st 9lb, it'll be interesting to see if he can replicate that success.
My ride aboard Seagulls Eleven in the 2000 Guineas looks promising, despite being at a big price. He has solid course form, and Hugo Palmer has previously won a Guineas, so hopefully history repeats itself this year.
I'm also riding Approval for Highclere, who impressed with a victory at Glorious Goodwood last time out. This will be his first run of the season, aiming to continue his winning form and kick-start the season on a high note.
Moving to Sunday, Anna Swan, previously trained by Sir Michael Stoute, is one to watch in the Pretty Polly. With two wins and a Fillies' Mile appearance under her belt, she seems well-prepared for the distance and could start the day strongly.
Though I don't have a ride in the 1000 Guineas, but I like Lake Victoria, a filly I admired for her exceptional performances in America last year. Despite the Godolphin filly being favoured, I wouldn't be surprised if Aidan O'Brien triumphs again.
Finally, Merchant for Highclere looks promising. With a recent narrow win at Wolverhampton and more experience under his belt, he looks like he will be better on turf. Hopefully he can end the weekend on a high note and get the Championship off to a good start.
